What Happens When 911 Is Called
Things I wish someone had told me sooner about what first responders must do when someone passes outside of a hospital.
A few things I’ve learned and wish someone had told me sooner:
If someone passes away outside of a hospital and is not on hospice, 911 will be called. First responders must investigate, ask questions, and confirm the cause of death. It will feel invasive and unbearable in the moment, but they are doing their jobs.
They cannot accept your word that a Do Not Resuscitate is in place. It has to be on file, visible, and re-authorized every six months.
When wishes are documented and accessible, you spare your loved ones from carrying the weight of witnessing interventions that go against those wishes.
