When Emotions Spill Over

Those moments when tears well at a song, or the ache of realizing a partner is slipping away. Holding back comes at a cost.

We talked about those moments when emotions spill over without warning: tears welling at a song, the ache of realizing a partner is slipping away, thoughts of death, or the simple tenderness of being genuinely asked how we’re doing. Caregiving often asks us to guard our emotions, to stay composed so we don’t sway or worry the care recipient. But holding back comes at a cost. Sometimes the dam breaks, and the tears remind us we are human, not machines.

We also reflected on how this “holding it together” makes us appear receptive to advice, opening the door for others to offer suggestions, however well-meaning, that can sting as one more thing to carry. Even a phrase like “You need to get the pieces in place before you need them” can feel like a trigger rather than support. It prompted us to revisit Rabbi Brian’s Five Stages of Learning, and the reminder that when emotions are high, we often bump down a stage. This isn’t failure, it’s human.
