Beyond the Caregiver Label

We are more than the caregiving role we hold. Friendships feel most nourishing when others care about us as whole people.

Another theme we touched on was the experience of being stereotyped by our caregiving role. Too often, when people see us primarily as “the caregiver,” they share their own horror stories, jump into advice-giving, or try to “fix” our situation. While these responses are usually well-intentioned, they can feel invalidating and intrusive.

We reminded ourselves that we are more than the caregiving role we hold. Friendships and connections feel most nourishing when others care about us as whole people, not just about the job we’re doing. Sometimes that means gently redirecting conversations or saying, “Thanks for caring, but what I need right now is just for you to listen.”
