Advocate, Advocate, Advocate—Learning from Each Other's Persistence

The system often feels stacked against us, but persistence—asking again, standing firm, sharing what works—reminds us we're not powerless.

We reflected on the importance of advocating for our care recipients, not as a combative stance (unless necessary) but as an essential act of persistence. Often, the person between us and the solution we need—a scheduler, a service provider, a healthcare administrator—isn’t being willfully obstructive. They’re following a process, often unaware of the real-world pressures we’re carrying.

That doesn’t mean we accept “no” as the final answer. It means we recognize that persistence is necessary—and sometimes, a little fierceness is, too. Whether it’s pushing for a critical appointment, standing firm against dismissive attitudes, or navigating confusing red tape, caregiving teaches us that we often need to cobble together solutions and keep asking until we’re heard.

These situations aren’t easy, and the system often feels stacked against us—but by sharing strategies, by speaking up for what matters, and by supporting each other in these efforts, we remind ourselves that we’re not powerless.
